Summary:
The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance
The Elephant Man,
a wonderful play written by Bernard Pomerance, deals with the obscene nature targeted
to people with abnormalities in the nineteenth century. The play stars a man by
the name of John Merrick who must deal with a rare disorder that has cursed him
throughout his entire life. Forced to perform as a "freak of nature" (3),
Merrick must deal with the constant stares given to him by the audiences he fears.
Luckily for him a doctor by the name of Frederick Treves has offered to cope with
and aid Merrick. Merrick, now housed in a new setting with much more to be thankful
of, starts to seep into the lives of those around him. As time passes by Treves
begins to see the intellect and intelligence that has radiated off of Merrick, and
thus begins to develop new thoughts about the world around him.
